The internet is full of information, but much of it is wrong. A plastic surgeon answers these 7 common misconceptions with scientific evidence.

Public belief about aesthetic surgery often does not match scientific reality. These 7 misconceptions are the ones we hear most from social media — knowing how things actually stand makes the decision easier.

1. "Aesthetic surgery ruins your natural look"

The reality: That was the "overdone" trend of the 90s and the early 2000s (Hollywood vs. natural). In 2026 the guiding principle of aesthetic surgery is anti-detection — nobody should be able to tell you have had anything done.

Modern practice: - The "refresh" approach — turning back 5-10 years, not back to 25 - A combined approach — one operation with 3-4 small changes - Respect for the patient's own face

2. "You must not have it done young"

The reality: Some procedures only make sense at a young age:

  • **Preventive botox** (25-30): stops wrinkles from forming
  • **Rhinoplasty** (18+): once facial development is complete
  • **Otoplasty** (ear correction): from the age of 6

But: - A facelift is not recommended before 35 - Liposuction not before 18 - Mammoplasty 18+ (silicone implants 22+ in the USA)

3. "Plastic surgery is addictive"

The reality: "Plastic surgery addiction" is a psychiatric phenomenon — Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD); the statistic is 2% after surgery.

A good clinic at the consultation: - Explores the patient's motivation - Recommends psychotherapy where there are signs of BDD - Discusses realistic expectations

4. "Generic products have the same effect"

The reality: With botox and fillers, the brand is everything.

  • Allergan Botox — 30+ years of clinical trials
  • Generics from China or India — uncertified, shorter duration, 5 times the risk of an allergic reaction

How do you tell them apart? - Look at the brand's holographic label - Look at the categories in which the surgeon is an expert - Ask the clinic for a photograph of the vial being used

5. "Liposuction can be used as a weight-loss method"

The reality: Liposuction is a contouring operation, not weight loss. At most 4-6 kg can be removed safely.

The correct sequence: 1. Reach a normal weight with diet and exercise (a BMI below 25) 2. A stable weight for 6+ months 3. Then liposuction — on localised fat deposits

6. "It is cheaper to have it done abroad (Turkey, Iran)"

The reality: A low price most often means a trade-off in quality.

The risks: - If a revision is needed during recovery — the way back is far - Reaching your doctor in the event of a complication is difficult - The "clinic" video and the actual room may differ - Checking certification and licensing is difficult

In Azerbaijan surgeons of the same quality are 20-30% more expensive, but: - Consultation, surgery and recovery are all in one place - Revision and problem-solving take less time - There is no language barrier

7. "The consultation costs money, so I should hold off"

The reality: At reputable clinics the consultation is free — it is treated as a marketing cost.

A clinic that charges for a consultation either: - Has a surgeon in very high demand (15+ years of experience) - Deducts the fee from the cost of the subsequent operation

Our recommendation: Have a consultation at 2-3 different clinics (it is free, so there is no cost) and compare what you are told.
