About this procedure

Improving the aesthetic appearance of the nose by changing the shape and size of the nose. Both aesthetic and functional problems are solved.

Who is it for?

Suitable

  • Individuals over 18 who are unhappy with the shape, size, or profile of their nose and want to improve overall facial harmony
  • Patients with a deviated nasal septum or post-traumatic deformity who experience breathing difficulties
  • People with congenital nasal shape features (for example, a wide nasal tip, a saddle-shaped or humped bridge)
  • Candidates whose general health is suitable for surgery, who do not smoke or are willing to quit before the operation
  • Patients with realistic expectations of the outcome — seeking not perfection but a noticeable, harmonious improvement
  • Individuals whose facial bone structure has fully developed (typically 18+) and who are psychologically stable

May not be suitable

  • People under 18 whose facial bone structure is not yet fully formed (except for functional issues, which are assessed separately together with a family doctor)
  • People with a bleeding disorder, an uncontrolled chronic illness (for example, uncompensated diabetes), or severe cardiovascular disease
  • Candidates with suspected body dysmorphic disorder or unrealistic expectations of an ideal nose size — psychological support is recommended first in such cases
  • Patients who recently (typically within the last 6-12 months) had surgery in the same area and whose tissues have not yet fully stabilized
  • Women who are pregnant — the operation is postponed until after delivery
  • People with active sinusitis, nasal infection, or uncontrolled allergy episodes (treatment is required first)

Suitability is confirmed only at a doctor's examination. Results are individual.

The process step by step

Anesthesia: General anesthesia · 1.5-3 hours (depending on the scope of the surgery)
  1. 1

Initial consultation and discussion of expectations(30-45 minutes)

The plastic surgeon listens to what the patient is unhappy about, any breathing complaints, and their expectations. Facial proportions are evaluated, and the realistic limits of the outcome are explained openly.

  2. 2

    Medical examination and imaging(1 day)

An internal nasal examination (septum, turbinates) is performed, and a CT scan is taken if needed. Blood tests and a general health assessment for anesthesia are carried out.

  3. 3

    Surgical planning(1 session)

Together with the patient, the choice of open or closed technique, whether septum work is needed, and the expected visual outcome are finalized.

  4. 4

    Anesthesia(15-20 minutes)

In the operating room, the anesthesiologist administers general anesthesia; the patient remains asleep and pain-free throughout the procedure.

  5. 5

    Surgery(1.5-3 hours)

According to the chosen technique, the bone and cartilage structures of the nose are reshaped, and the septum is corrected if needed. At the end of surgery, internal packing and an external cast/splint are applied.

  6. 6

    Initial recovery and observation(24-48 hours)

The patient is monitored in the recovery room; the first night is spent at the clinic or at home under close supervision. A medication schedule for pain and swelling is prescribed.

Recovery process

Week 1

Swelling around the nose and blue-purple bruising under the eyes are most pronounced during this period. The external splint/cast is usually removed on day 6-7. Mild pain and a stuffy-nose feeling are normal.

Restriction: Heavy physical exertion, bending over, and wearing glasses (which press on the bridge of the nose), except for sunglasses, are restricted. Keeping the head elevated while sleeping is recommended.

Weeks 2-4

Most of the swelling subsides and the bruising fades. By the end of this period, most patients can return to daily life and light work.

Restriction: Contact sports, pool/sea, sauna, and direct sun exposure are not recommended during this time.

1-3 months

Most of the visible swelling resolves and the shape of the nose becomes clearer, though fine subcutaneous swelling has not fully subsided yet. Breathing gradually improves.

Restriction: It is recommended to avoid strenuous sports and activities that risk impact to the nose (contact sports, diving).

6-12 months

The fine swelling in the nasal tip area fully resolves and the final shape emerges — this is the realistic timeframe needed for the complete rhinoplasty result. Tissues fully stabilize.

Restriction: No special restrictions; daily life is fully normal.

Risks and transparency

Every surgical procedure carries risks. Transparency is the basis of trust for us.

  • Swelling and blue-purple bruising — seen in nearly every patient, gradually fades
  • Temporary change in sensation (numbness, tingling) at and around the nasal tip
  • Risk of bleeding or infection (rare, but present in any surgical operation)
  • Unexpected change in breathing or not achieving the desired improvement
  • Possibility of asymmetry or deviation from the expected aesthetic result
  • Need for revision (repeat correction) surgery — statistically somewhat more likely with rhinoplasty compared to other operations
  • General risks associated with anesthesia (standard probabilities present with any general anesthesia)
What does the price depend on?
  • Chosen technique — open or closed rhinoplasty
  • Whether septum correction is included in the surgery
  • Whether the surgery is primary or revision (repeat)
  • Type and duration of anesthesia
  • Clinic equipment and stay conditions (room, observation period)
  • Surgeon's experience and the extent of examination/imaging chosen

Frequently asked questions

How much does rhinoplasty cost, and what does the price depend on?

The price varies depending on the technique (open/closed), whether septum correction is included, whether the surgery is primary or revision, the type of anesthesia, and the clinic. An exact price can only be given after an in-person consultation and examination — you can book a free consultation for this.

Is rhinoplasty painful?

Since the operation is performed under general anesthesia, no pain is felt during the procedure. In the following days there may be mild to moderate pain and a stuffy feeling, which is easily managed with pain medication prescribed by the doctor.

When can I return to work after the operation?

Office work that does not require physical exertion can usually be resumed within 10-14 days. After the splint is removed on day 6-7, visible swelling and bruising decrease, but for physically demanding work an additional few weeks of waiting is recommended.

From what age can rhinoplasty be performed?

It is generally recommended after age 18, when the facial bone structure has finished developing. Only in cases of significant breathing problems can a functional intervention at an earlier age be considered separately.

How long-lasting is the result?

The result of rhinoplasty is considered permanent, since it is based on changing the bone and cartilage structure of the nose. The final shape fully emerges after the 6-12 month period needed for the tissues to completely stabilize.

Are there any visible scars after the operation?

With the closed technique, the incision is inside the nose, so no visible external scar remains. With the open technique, a very thin scar may remain under the columella (the external part of the septum), which becomes practically unnoticeable over time.

What is the best season for rhinoplasty?

Medically, a specific season is not a requirement; the operation is performed safely year-round. Still, some patients prefer the autumn-winter months to reduce the negative effect of sun exposure on the skin during the swelling period.

What is the difference between open and closed rhinoplasty?

With the closed technique, all incisions are made inside the nose and no external scar remains; it is usually chosen for milder changes. With the open technique, a small additional incision is made on the columella, giving the surgeon a wider view and an advantage for complex structural changes. The choice depends on the nasal anatomy and the planned changes.

Can a deviated septum be corrected at the same time as rhinoplasty?

Yes, correcting a deviated septum (septoplasty) is often combined with aesthetic rhinoplasty in a single operation. This improves breathing function and helps achieve a symmetrical nose shape.

How does rhinoplasty affect breathing?

A properly planned rhinoplasty, especially when septum correction is included, can improve breathing. At the same time, even in purely aesthetic operations, the internal structures are approached carefully so as not to worsen existing breathing function — this is discussed in detail during the consultation.

Is a change in nasal sensation normal after the operation?

Yes, temporary numbness or tingling at and around the nasal tip is a fairly common temporary occurrence. It usually resolves gradually on its own within a few weeks to months.

When is a revision (repeat) rhinoplasty needed?

After waiting at least 12 months for the tissues to fully stabilize, if significant dissatisfaction with shape or function remains, a revision operation may be considered. This decision is always made after an individual examination.
