After liposuction: why do the compression garment and lymphatic drainage matter?

30% of the liposuction result depends on compression and lymphatic drainage. Choosing the right garment, how many weeks to wear it, and what it protects you from.

The result of liposuction depends not only on the surgeon — it depends strongly on the post-operative routine too. The statistic: patients who do not wear their compression as prescribed get a 30-40% worse result — wavy skin, fibrous tissue, asymmetry.

Why does compression matter?

As fat cells are removed during liposuction, empty spaces form beneath the skin. These spaces:

1. Collect fluid (seroma) 2. Let the skin reattach unevenly (a wavy appearance) 3. Allow fibrous tissue to form (firm lumps)

The compression garment presses the skin against the tissue and makes it reattach symmetrically.

The wearing schedule

StageDurationType of garment
Phase 11-3 weeksType 1 compression, 24/7 (removed only in the shower)
Phase 24-6 weeksType 2 (medium), 12 hours during the day
Phase 37-12 weeksSports compression, 6-8 hours a day

How do you choose the right garment?

The first phase (firm compression): - Positive pressure of 25-30 mmHg - Sticky silicone zones (so it does not slip) - Drainage openings (for the suture) - A front zip (it should open at the side so you can put it on yourself)

Recommended brands: Marena, Voe, Lipoelastic — made to professional standards.

Lymphatic drainage massage (manual lymphatic drainage)

The procedure given the least attention after liposuction, yet the most important one. The lymphatic system is injured when fat is removed — massage restores it.

The schedule - Days 3-5: the first session (a certified lymphatic massage therapist) - Month 1: 3 times a week - Months 2-3: 1 time a week - In total: 12-15 sessions

Why does it help? - Swelling subsides 50% faster - Fibrous tissue does not form - The risk of wavy skin falls - Recovery overall is shortened by 30%

Self-care: what you can do yourself

Every day: - A cool shower (2-3 min) — reduces swelling - 2 litres of water (for lymphatic flow) - Low-salt food (2 weeks) - Raising your legs while lying down (30 min in the evening)

Active care: - Gentle self-massage for 10-15 min a day (as your surgeon directs) - Alternating cold and warm compresses (after 2 weeks)

Misconceptions

  • "I only take the compression garment off to sleep in bed" — **night-time compression matters most**, because fluid collects while you sleep.
  • "Lymphatic drainage is a luxury, it is not needed" — **the main cause of fibrous tissue** is a lack of drainage.
  • "Exercise speeds up recovery" — exercise before 4 weeks creates **fibrosis**.

When is the final result visible?

  • 3 months: 70% of the swelling goes
  • 6 months: the contour becomes clear
  • 12 months: the final result
